Is a 5-cup coffee maker the right size?

The 25 oz carafe holds about five cups of 5 oz, the cup size coffee makers are usually measured in. In everyday mugs of 8 oz that is about three mugs. Amaste describes it as a coffee maker for one or two people, not a 12-cup machine.

  • A good fit for one or two coffee drinkers, a small kitchen, a dorm room or an office desk, where its compact footprint of 6.3 by 7.8 inches matters.
  • Too small if you regularly make coffee for a family or for guests; a 10- or 12-cup machine will save you a second brew.

How to use the Amaste coffee maker

A printed user manual comes in the box. These are the basic steps for a first brew; for the controls on your unit, follow the manual.

  1. Wash the parts. Wash the glass carafe and the reusable filter in warm, soapy water and rinse them.
  2. Run a first cycle with water only. Fill the tank with clean water, brew without coffee and pour the water away. It rinses the inside before the first pot.
  3. Add water. Fill the tank with cold water to the level you want, using the markings on the water gauge.
  4. Add coffee. Put the reusable filter in the basket and add medium-ground coffee. A common starting point is about one level tablespoon per 5-oz cup; adjust to taste.
  5. Place the carafe. Set the carafe with its lid on the warming plate.
  6. Choose the strength and brew. Select Mild, Medium or Strong and start the brew.
  7. Serve. The warming plate keeps the coffee warm, and the machine switches off on its own after 30 minutes.

Mild, Medium or Strong: choosing the brew strength

The three settings change how long the water takes to pass through the grounds: a longer brew extracts more from the same amount of coffee and gives a stronger cup.

SettingBrew timeResult
MildAbout 6 minutesA lighter, quicker cup
MediumAbout 9 minutesAn everyday balance
StrongAbout 11 minutesA fuller, bolder cup

Brew times are as Amaste lists them; a full tank and the starting water temperature can change them a little.

Cleaning and descaling

After each use

  • Empty the carafe and the filter, then wash both in warm, soapy water and rinse.
  • Let the water tank dry with the lid open.
  • Wipe the outside and the warming plate with a damp cloth once the machine has cooled.

Descaling

Mineral scale builds up faster with hard water and slows the brew. Descale every one to two months: fill the tank with a mix of white vinegar and water, about half and half, run a cycle without coffee, then run two or three cycles with clean water to rinse. A commercial descaler works too; follow its directions.
